On the east bank of the Nile 1000 km upriver from Philae. An enormous site, known historically simply as Dongola, this was the capital of the medieval Kingdom of Makouria. The site of ongoing excavations by the Polish Center of Mediterranean Archaeology since 1969. They have so far uncovered at least a dozen churches, a monastery, fortifications, and a variety of other buildings.

Sources: annual progress reports on the excavations are scattered all through PAM, the Polish Archaeology in the Mediterranean Reports, from vol. I onward. See also and especially Godlewski 2002.
