Medieval Nubia was primarily the kingdom which emerged from the unification of the three kingdoms of Nobadia, Makouria and Alodia. In Old Nubian documents, this political unit is called the Kingdom of Dotawo. In Coptic and Greek documents, kings of Dotawo describe themselves as kings of Aroud() and Makrout(), which has been understood to mean, "king of the Alodians and Makouritans."
