On the west bank of the Nile 336 km upriver from Philae. An Early and Classic Christian settlement which originated in Ballana or possibly in Meroitic times. About one-third of the village was excavated by a University of Colorado Expedition in 1962 and 1963; the church was excavated by the Sudan Antiquities Service in 1962.
